The short answer: 1920 × 1080 at 16:9

Everything else on this page follows from those two numbers.

1920 × 1080Recommended width and height in pixels.
16:9Divide 1920 by 16, multiply by 9. That is where 1080 comes from.
1280 × 720The usual minimum HD size. Sharp on a laptop, softer on a large display.
5 MBA common Zoom upload ceiling, not a requirement of the image itself.

A 16:9 file at 1920×1080 is also the right starting point for Teams, Meet and Webex. Only the upload cap tends to differ.

Why a wrong ratio looks so bad

Three ways a mismatched image reaches the meeting frame.

Letterboxed

A square or portrait image does not fill a widescreen frame. Some clients add bars, which reads as a slide rather than a room.

Stretched

Forcing 4:3 into 16:9 widens faces and furniture. It is the most obvious sign that a background was not prepared.

Cropped by surprise

The app may trim the top and bottom, or the sides. You cannot choose which part disappears after upload, so crop it yourself first.

Portrait photos, screenshots and scans

What to expect before you drag the crop.

Phone portraits

A 9:16 photo has plenty of height and too little width. The cover crop keeps the middle band, so check that the room around the subject survives. Zoom out is not possible below 100% — the frame must stay filled.

Desktop screenshots

Most monitors are already 16:9, so a screenshot usually needs resizing rather than reframing. Text will look soft after JPEG compression; choose PNG if legibility matters.

Scanned documents

A scan is usually portrait and low-contrast. Use it only as a graphic backdrop, not as a fake document behind you — participants can tell, and small print turns to mush.

Fix the size in three steps

Then upload the result once.

STEP 1

Drop the image

JPG, PNG or WebP, up to 30 MB. The tool reads the real pixel dimensions and orientation.

STEP 2

Choose 1920×1080

Keep the recommended preset unless you specifically need the smaller 1280×720 file. Reframe with drag and zoom.

STEP 3

Export and upload

Download the JPG or PNG, then add it in Zoom under Settings → Background & effects → Virtual backgrounds.

If the exported file is still rejected, the problem is weight rather than dimensions. Use the Zoom background compressor to hit a specific MB target.

Questions

Dimensions, ratios and the 5 MB myth.

What size is a Zoom background?

Zoom recommends 1920×1080 pixels at a 16:9 aspect ratio. That is the size this tool exports by default.

What is the minimum Zoom background size?

1280×720 is the usual minimum for HD. Smaller files still upload in some versions, but they look soft on a full-screen call because Zoom has to upscale them.

Why does the aspect ratio need to be 16:9?

A meeting window is widescreen. A square or portrait image cannot fill it without cropping, stretching or leaving bars, and different Zoom clients handle that differently. Starting at 16:9 removes the guesswork.

Does Zoom crop my background image?

Zoom fits the file into its background frame, and the exact behavior varies by version and device. A correctly sized 16:9 file avoids unexpected crops and letterboxing.

Is there a file size limit for Zoom backgrounds?

Many Zoom desktop versions reject images above roughly 5 MB. The limit can vary by version and account, so keep the JPG lean if an upload fails.

Can I upload a 4K image as a Zoom background?

Yes, but it is heavier and Zoom does not display more than the meeting frame needs. A 1920×1080 export is sharp, fast to upload and easier to compress.

Will Microsoft Teams accept the same file?

Yes. Teams uses the same 16:9, 1920×1080 JPG or PNG. Add it under Background effects, then Add new.
