Zoom Background Maker
Turn a phone photo, a room shot or a design into a clean Zoom virtual background. Drag to reframe, zoom to crop, then download a file that Zoom will accept. Nothing leaves your device.
What this tool actually fixes
Three problems that stop a photo from looking like a real background.
Wrong shape
A phone photo is 4:3 or 9:16, not 16:9. The tool fills the frame with a cover crop instead of stretching your face or adding black bars.
Awkward framing
Auto-crop often cuts the wrong side. Drag the image, zoom in, or nudge it with the arrow keys until there is clean space beside your head.
Unclear size
You get an exact 1920×1080 export with a live file-size estimate, so you know it fits before you open Zoom settings.
Zoom background specs at a glance
Use these numbers unless your organization publishes its own standard.
| Platform | Recommended size | Ratio | Formats | Typical upload cap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zoom desktop | 1920×1080 | 16:9 | JPG, PNG | Around 5 MB |
| Microsoft Teams | 1920×1080 | 16:9 | JPG, PNG | Up to 30 MB |
| Google Meet | 1920×1080 | 16:9 | JPG, PNG | Varies by account |
| Webex | 1920×1080 | 16:9 | JPG, PNG | Varies by version |
Platform limits change between versions and account types. If an upload is rejected, check the current official help page — or run the file through the Zoom background compressor.
How to make a Zoom background from a photo
No editor, no layers, no export menu.
Add your photo
Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP, paste from the clipboard, or choose a file. Photos up to 30 MB are accepted.
Frame the shot
Drag to move the crop. Zoom in slightly if the background needs to fill more of the frame. Leave quiet space where your head and shoulders will sit.
Download and upload
Save the 1920×1080 file, then open Zoom → Settings → Background & effects → Virtual backgrounds → Plus → Add image.

What makes a good DIY background
Composition matters more than resolution once the file is 1920×1080.
Keep the middle quiet
Your head covers the center of the frame. Put detail — a lamp, a plant, a window — toward the edges, not directly behind your hair.
Avoid fine patterns
Bookshelves, blinds and dense foliage shimmer when Zoom compresses the video. A calmer wall or a softly blurred room survives better.
Match the light
A sunlit background behind a face lit by a single desk lamp looks artificial. Pick a scene with similar brightness and color temperature to your room.
Questions
Short answers before you export.
Is this Zoom background maker free?
Yes. The tool is free, exports have no watermark, and no account is required.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. Your image is decoded, cropped and exported in your browser with the Canvas API. The file never leaves your device.
What size should a Zoom background be?
1920×1080 pixels at a 16:9 aspect ratio is the recommended size. This tool exports exactly that resolution.
Can I use a phone photo?
Yes. Any JPG, PNG or WebP up to 30 MB works. HEIC files need to be exported as JPG first because most browsers cannot decode them.
Should I download a JPG or a PNG?
JPG is smaller and is the better choice for photos. PNG keeps sharp edges for graphics, but the file can be several times larger.
Will the file work in Microsoft Teams?
Yes. Microsoft Teams accepts the same 1920×1080 JPG under Background effects, then Add new. No second export is needed.
Why does my background look blurry?
Backgrounds lose sharpness when the source image is smaller than 1920×1080 or when you zoom deeply into a crop. Start with the largest original you have and keep the zoom close to 100%.
